So, with Little Wars coming up fast, I am always reminded of the really great terrain that shows up. This year I've decided to start in on making some terrain boards- in this case for 25mm french Indian War miniatures that I have been working on. Each piece is 12"x12", and I am looking for suggestions on what to add next. Maybe some 12"x24" pieces for the flatter ground- The 2nd piece is 8" high, with a path at the 3" mark. I want to get the steep pieces done as well, not sure to make them 'edge pieces' or add more tall pieces that can go anywhere on a table. The third picture is a 13"X9" (at the widest point) and is a piece I made for role-playing game terrain, as you can see the 25mm reaper/Dark Sword figures. Though I can picture some ACW, AWI troops fighting around and in it, or a WWII sniper behind a headstone. The walls have been built up with actual stone, with lots of levels of groundwork foliage.
A Note on the trees in ALL these pieces...
The trees are just some out of the bag pieces, which can be removed- not only to store them easier, but also so I can add more or less trees on each board, as well as to allow for scale changes. I actually had some "GHQ microarmor" tanks and trucks on the path, for a nice WWII Italian campaign look. So for these reasons all boards have tree bases placed throughout, covered by ground cover so it can be thick with trees or a bit bare. The tall multi-level cliff has 15 tree bases, though the picture here only shows a few trees so you can get a better look at the whole. Right now I am in the process of making very realistic trees, trunk to foliage, the texture I'm aiming for is quite high and well researched. So the trees here are just some "fillers" until I have a good amount stocked up.
So, any feedback on what to add would be great. In addition to making a stock of more realistic trees, I am working on stone walls for different scales, made out of actual stone (no resin pieces for me!), I like not only the look, but the feel of actual stone. I would like to add trees (as well as tall grasses, bushes) to the walls, giving life to places in the walls.
Stay tuned for updates on my journey to make great wargaming terrain that is very gamer- friendly- the ease of adding, taking off trees in a snap is one thing that makes this terrain great to build and game with.
